Leeds United must learn from mistakes with Kalvin Phillips – Jesse Marsch

Jesse Marsch has opened up on the mistake he made with Leeds United talisman Patrick Bamford amid his short lived injury return.

The England international suffered a plantar fascia rupture just 23 minutes into his start against Wolves that will see him sidelined for another six weeks.

In an attempt to avoid the same mistake with key midfielder Kalvin Phillips, the American will treat the 26-year-old with extra caution before bringing him back into the fold.

“The worst thing, even with the situation with Patrick, I felt so bad after his injury and I certainly don’t want to repeat any of those mistakes with anyone else,” Marsch told Yorkshire Evening Post.

“So we want to make sure Kalvin’s as close to 100 per cent as he can be.

“He’s close. He’s close to starting and I think we’ll use the next two weeks to get him fitter and stronger and healthier and ready to go for Palace.”

Caution

The blame doesn’t rest on Marsch’s shoulders. Leeds have had a torrid time with injuries this term and with Bamford struggling to remain fit all season long as he bounces on and off the treatment table.

The damage has more or less been done with the Whites sitting disappointingly in 16th in the Premier League.

The former RB Leipzig boss’ arrival has helped massively in their bid to stay in the league as they now boast a nine-point gap on the drop zone.

With that being said, Leeds still have a lot of work to do. All of the teams below them have games in hand on the Whites and the table could look very different if the results go in their favour.

Which makes it very important to get Phillips back into play as quickly and safely as possible in order to see out their survival fight.
