Leeds United must consider January bid for Cody Gakpo as he shines for Netherlands

Leeds United fail in their attempts to sign Cody Gakpo and could make a January offer for him as he continues his impressive start to the season.

He scored a goal for the Netherlands against Poland on Thursday and was the best attacking player on the pitch, despite Robert Lewandowski leading the line for the Poles

The Whites were linked with Gakpo throughout the summer and made a late deadline-day effort to secure his services.

However, that did prove to be successful but they are understood to still be interested in signing him in January. [Fabrizio Romano]

That’s easier said than done for Leeds as he will be participating in the World Cup before the window opens.

A tournament of that magnitude will certainly have everyone keeping tabs, especially with no football going on elsewhere and the market opening within a few weeks.

Gakpo’s value is going to sky-rocket but Leeds must still not be dissuaded as they do have the money to sign him.

PSV will certainly need Leeds to smash their transfer record and if they were willing to do that in the summer, they surely would not mind it in the winter as well.

The earlier they make a move for him, the better will be their chances of snapping his services and they may have to hope that he does not have a good World Cup.

Interesting times ahead but he’s one player Victor Orta cannot take his eye off and we will be really surprised if Leeds do not launch at least an initial offer for the attacker who’s undoubtedly got world class potential.

In other Leeds United news, an Elland Road-linked midfielder is now certain to leave his club in the coming weeks as a host of Premier League clubs are vying for his services.
