Leeds United move for Sonny Perkins hijacked by Tottenham after controversial West Ham exit

The expected arrival at Leeds United of West Ham youngster Sonny Perkins is in doubt after a late hijack from Tottenham, according to ExWHUemployee.

A month ago Phil Hay reported in The Athletic that the Whites were looking to continue their academy recruitment with the 18-year-old forward, and they appeared to be in pole position since.

Perkins left the Hammers on Friday (1 July) under a cloud, with the East London club releasing a statement on their website expressing their unhappiness with the situation.

It said: “The Club is disappointed with Perkins’ representatives and strongly believe he was approached to sign for another club which led to him asking to be released from his scholarship at West Ham United.

“West Ham United take this matter very seriously”.

According to the respected West Ham source ExWHUemployee, who has over 120,000 followers on Twitter, the player was headed for Leeds until Tottenham jumped in at the last.

They wrote on Twitter Friday evening: “He was meant to be going to Leeds but Spurs, the club he supports made a late move.”

This will be a kick in the teeth to those at Thorp Arch and the fans, as it was widely thought that Perkins was due to become a Whites player.

For players at a young age it can be difficult to turn down the club they have grown up supporting, but there doesn’t seem to be any shortage of irritation to go round with this move.

The wage demands that his agent was making hastened his departure from East London, and it is not clear if the side from the capital’s forceful statement upon his exit is directed at Leeds.

If it is then it looks like it might all be for nothing if both sides are left empty handed and Spurs waltz in to take advantage.

ExWHUemployee had reported on Patreon on 9 June: “We believe that Sonny’s agent is asking for a first-team wage and that Leeds are the most likely to pay it.

“There was some interest from Villa but it appears that Leeds are the more likely to get the deal over the line and hope to conclude it in the next couple of weeks.”

Yet Tottenham arrived on the scene in the mean time and may have stolen the midfielder out from under the Whites’ noses.

It could be a frustrating episode all round for everyone except those at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In other Leeds United news, the club are chasing another American import from the Bundesliga on top of Tyler Adams.
