Leeds United mooted deal for Tottenham ace Ben Davies in January transfer window would be shocking – Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …
Paul Robinson has written off Leeds United’s chances of landing a late deal for Tottenham’s Ben Davies before the transfer window shuts.
The Whites like the Welsh defender and The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested that the thinking at Elland Road is based on a hope that January moves at Spurs might render him “peripheral” in the squad going forward, potentially offering up an opportunity inside the deadline.
Daniel Farke has been looking for reinforcements across the defensively line this month, amid injury concerns and full-back exits, including the early loan termination of Davies’ Tottenham teammate Djed Spence, but so far hasn’t been able to sign anyone.
Robinson admits that Davies, 30, would be an excellent option but believes it is little more than a “pipe dream” for the international to drop down to the Championship midseason.
The Welshman has lost his starting left-back spot to Destiny Udogie this season, but was pressed into action at centre-back by Ange Postecoglou for nine straight Premier League fixtures heading into the winter window, before Spurs signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa in a move that sent Spence the other way on loan.
Sky Sports pundit Robinson accepts that Davies faces being in and out of the side but would be shocked if a deal was possible before 11pm on 1 February.
“No chance. It’s never going to happen”, he said speaking to MOT Leeds News.
“He’s a top quality Premier League player, an international player, and he’s been excellent when he’s played at Spurs.

“He’s played at left-back and centre-half. Yes he’s been in and out of the side, but I think that’s a pipe dream for Leeds to be able to sign a player of that quality in the January window on loan.
“I would be extremely surprised if that deal was to happen.”
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay believes recent moves behind the scenes run the risk of causing a major problem in the Whites dressing room.
