Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams opens up on USMNT captaincy role

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams has suggested that he is “comfortable” wearing the captain’s armband for the USA National team if the decision is being made.

Ahead of their opening group game clash against Wales in the World cup in Qatar, Adams has shared he is absolutely in dark about who the next captain will be.

Coach Gregg Berhalter has alternated the captaincy between several players, including Adams, during their World Cup qualification games.

“We have no idea who the captain is going to be yet,” said Adams, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Obviously since Gregg has taken over, it’s been a shared responsibility amongst our ‘leadership council’ quote, unquote, and we have a bunch of guys that can wear that armband, we all lead in various ways, of course.

“I’ve worn it at times and feel very comfortable wearing it, but I have total belief in my other teammates as well if that’s a decision that’s made, that’s a decision that’s made.”

Future captain

Adams was spotted wearing the captain’s armband earlier this week, and there is a high chance that he could be made the permanent skipper for the World Cup games.

The 23-year-old could also come into contention to become the next captain for Leeds as well.

He has cemented his position in the side under Jesse Marsch and has emerged as one of the key players for the club. Despite picking up a red card against Tottenham Hotspur, he has proved himself as a reliable player for the Whites.

At Leeds, the captaincy role had been divided into six players back in February, apart from Liam Cooper. The leadership council is constituted of players like Patrick Bamford, Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Adam Forshaw and Rodrigo.

Kalvin Phillips was part of that but left the club in the summer, while Ayling and Forshaw are facing uncertain futures at the club. Bamford remains injured most of the time, thus Marsch’s original dressing room would need a restructure, where Adams could get a major role in the future.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has revealed the whispers he’s heard at Elland Road about when the 49ers will complete their takeover.
