Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton 'expected' to depart Elland Road

Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton is “expected” to leave Elland Road this summer, according to reliable journalist Graham Smyth.

Writing for The Yorkshire Evening Post on 28 June, Smyth reports that the 22-year-old could either leave on loan or permanently before the window ends.

The central midfielder, who can also play as a right back, has progressed through the youth ranks at the club and has made 80 appearances for the Whites in all competitions.

Best for him

Shackleton made his senior debut for the club in 2018, and made strong impression under Marcelo Bielsa.

In the 2019-20 season, he made 22 appearances in the Championship and scored two goals. At that point, it looked like the Whites have got a gem of a player on their hands.

However, his progress at the club has been halted by injuries. Last season, he featured in only 14 games in the Premier League, with the majority of them coming from the bench.

It looks like he needs a fresh start, and a move away from Elland Road could be ideal for his development. The fact that he could be sold permanently suggests that Jesse Marsch doesn’t rate him highly or that he doesn’t feature in his immediate plans.

Kalvin Phillips is all set to leave for Manchester City, but that won’t help him an iota in getting regular opportunities. Leeds have already bolstered their midfielder by signing Marc Roca and Brenden Aaronson, and more players are expected to arrive this summer.
