Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray may be dropped v Norwich City
Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray could make way for Luke Ayling when they take on Norwich City at Carrow Road on 21 October.
Gray played out of position at right-back as the Whites secured a 2-1 victory over Bristol City on the weekend but the underlying numbers were not all that impressive.
While it was a great performance considering it’s not his regular position, this is unlikely to be the long-term option for Leeds.
According to Sofascore, he failed to complete a single cross all game and that’s something Leeds will need against teams that keep it tight in the middle.
If the plan is for him to drop into midfield and form a box as some of the well-drilled sides do, then Gray can be considered.
However, his touch map shows that Farke wants him to play as an orthodox full-back which means Ayling may be brought back into the side.
That said, Gray won seven tackles against Bristol which shows that he can do the defensive role of a full-back perfectly.
With Djed Spence injured, Farke will also be delighted that he can count on the teenager to put in a shift in that position as well.
Gray might have to work on his long passes and crossing ability if he is to thrive in that role but for him doing it for the first time in a professional game, there wasn’t much to fault in his display.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay claims that big European clubs have been keeping tabs on a Whites player for a while and are still willing to sign him.
