EFL pundit Jobi McAnuff has claimed that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be a serious contender for an England call-up should the Whites earn promotion to the Premier League.
There have been talks of the 24-year-old getting international recognition in March, with Gareth Southgate having watched him and Ben White against Sheffield Wednesday.
McAnuff believes that Phillips will be more concentrated on taking his boyhood club back to the Premier League this season.
McAnuff believes that Phillips shares a similar role to Patrick Bamford in Leeds’ success in the Championship.
“He’s probably focusing on his performances for Leeds United,” he told the EFL Podcast.
“I’m sure that’ll be very much his priority, to try and get his team promoted. Anything on top of that, when you start talking about England, that’s all bonus material.
“I’m sure if he keeps doing as well as he is, and for me, particularly if they promoted and hold on to him and he goes up to the Premier League and starts playing well I’m sure he’ll be a serious contender for an England call up.”
Being a boyhood Whites fan, Phillips will definitely be concentrating solely on taking his team back up to the Premier League with only 10 games to play this season.
We all expect Phillips to earn a call-up, but there is a big hope around Elland Road that it doesn’t come in March, with a two-week rest certainly the better option in the business end of the campaign.
Phillips certainly deserves it, and we have to say that we would love McAnuff’s prediction to come true – promotion first, international recognition second.
