Leeds United may have just appointed Michael Skubala in charge for rest of the season

Leeds United interim coach Michael Skubala is expected to remain in charge for the rest of the month, and could well potentially be in charge for the remainder of the campaign, according to the Daily Mail.

The Whites are yet to name a full-time replacement for Jesse Marsch following his sacking over a week ago [6 February] and have been linked with a whole host of names.

Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola, Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder were leading contenders for the position – while West Bromwich Albion head coach Carlos Corberan was also strongly linked, however, the club still have not confirmed their appointment.

Skubala took charge of Leeds United’s last two games against Manchester United alongside assistants Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas.

And according to the Daily Mail [14 February], the Under-21s coach is likely to remain in charge for the rest of the month, and potentially for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that Skubala has impressed players and club chiefs since taking the reins and will now be in control of Saturday’s clash against relegation rivals Everton and the visit of Southampton, who will be remarkably managed by Marsch in the coming days.

Pivotal

While all the clubs around Leeds United have named managerial appointments for the foreseeable, the Whites are still scrambling to appoint their own which could well prove incredibly pivotal and decisive come the end of the campaign.

Certainly, the club have had several candidates on their list, exciting names in all honesty. However, most of those names are currently in a job which means it would have been hard to persuade them to leave their current position and come and save the Whites from their perilous position.

Corberan and Iraola are exciting and promising candidates but there was no chance they would leave the jobs they’re doing at West Brom and Rayo Vallecano respectively, which leads to the argument that the club should have had succession plans if all else failed.

The latest news that Skubala will be in charge for the foreseeable shows they don’t have a plan, and that will be worrying the club supporters. And they will be hoping and praying the Under-21 manager can spur the players on in the coming weeks.

Their Premier League future is in real jeopardy, which means the club board must act swiftly in naming a full-time successor rather than an interim one. The players need consistency and stability at this pivotal stage of the season.
