Leeds United manager news as Paraag Marathe to explore other options than Carlos Corberan

Leeds United vice-chairman Paraag Marathe is set to explore alternative managerial options to Carlos Corberan, who could yet be tempted to take the job, according to the Daily Mail.

Jesse Marsch was given the sack on Monday afternoon (6 February) after a run of over three months without a league win and having recorded just four wins in the Premier League this season.

West Brom boss Corberan has been labelled the immediate frontrunner to replace the American after previously working at Elland Road as part of Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching staff. [90min, Monday 6 February]

However, Marathe and sporting director Orta are set to look elsewhere for options despite Corberans favourite tag.

The Daily Mail wrote (Monday 6 February): “Corberan, who was considered for the Everton job following Frank Lampard’s sacking, could be tempted by a return to Leeds.

“However, there is a feeling the club, primarily Orta and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, will explore other options, too.

“Rayo Vallecano coach Andoni Iraola is another high on their list and is admired particularly by Orta.”

Contingency plan

The Whites would have had a contingency plan in place all season long in case they did have to cut ties with Marsch, and Corberan and Iraola look to be the two managers who looked suited to taking the reins at Elland Road.

Both coaches play in a similar style to Marsch and the players currently in the first-team squad, with Iraola’s Real Vallecano surging up to fifth in La Liga with a win on Monday night.

You can’t help but feel that these are the two main managerial targets for Orta and Marathe, and both would likely be gettable for Leeds as neither are managing top European-level sides.

Corberan has seen his stock rise at a rapid rate since taking over from Steve Bruce in the West Midlands, taking the Baggies from the precipice of the relegation zone into the Championship play-off places in just five months.

Their remarkable turnaround is a credit to the Spaniard’s coaching abilities, and his previous ties with Leeds make him the ideal candidate to succeed Marsch.
