Leeds United manager news as Phil Hay shares Nuno Espírito Santo verdict

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay believes former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo will inevitably be linked with the vacant Leeds United job if they look for short-term targets.

Leeds United have been unsuccessful in their attempts to find a replacement for Jesse Marsch after the club decided to sack the American.

Hay confessed that Leeds United can’t afford to be precious in their search for a new boss and Nuno slides into the category of someone who could come in and do a job at the club for three months.

“I think one that will come up inevitably is Nuno, and I don’t think people will jump for joy at that,” said Hay speaking on The Phil Hay Show. (10 February)

“Although, he clearly did have some very good years at Wolves, but he would fall into the category of somebody who you could reasonably approach and say we need somebody for the three months.

“It’s pretty clear that’s not what they want to do and that not the route they want to go down, which is why going after somebody like your man at Rayo Vallecano, but I guess if you’re in trouble and there’s not much of the season left and not getting exactly what you want, you probably can’t afford to be precious can you.

Oh, dear.

Is the lord and saviour Hay predicting the inevitable future of Leeds United’s search for a new manager? There’s a very good chance he might be.

Nuno certainly isn’t the name that will bring a heap load of noise and praise to Elland Road but maybe Hay is right, can the Whites afford to be precious right now?

The longer the search goes on and the more pies in the face that the club suffer, settling for a manager on a short-term contract may be the best route to go down.

Everton seems to have got it right with the appointment of Sean Dyche and although it’s very early days there, the result they achieved against Arsenal speaks volumes.

Whether or not this is something the Leeds United hierarchy would consider is a completely different story and it’s clear the club want a manager for the long run in West Yorkshire.

Hopefully, fans will get some answers in the next 48 hours.
