Leeds United manager news as Andoni Iraola price skyrockets despite contract update

Andoni Iraola’s price is “skyrocketing” despite his contract coming to a close in the summer of 2023 as Leeds United look to appoint the Rayo Vallecano boss as their new head coach, according to AS.

The Telegraph claim Iraola and Arne Slot are now the two names the board are focusing on after Carlos Corberan signed a long-term contract extension at West Brom.

However, AS report (8 February, pg. 14) that Iraola’s value is only increasing after leading the Vallecano to fifth in La Liga and only three points behind Atletico Madrid.

“His price is skyrocketing and it’s no wonder. His trajectory has been meteoric,” they wrote, with his contract ending in June.

Testing the water

Rayo Vallecano clearly don’t want to lose a manager who has given them one of their most memorable seasons to date. However, there’s only so much power they can hold over a manager who is out of contract in the summer, and if a reasonable compensation package arrives from Leeds, they will find it hard to turn it down.

He would be an intriguing appointment, and one straight out of the Marcelo Bielsa handbook. Looking longer term it’s a move which could make a lot of sense, but unfortunately, short-term requirements are needed at Elland Road.

Leeds were found out playing an expansive style under Jesse Marsch and it’s what’s caused their current demise. The first priority has to be steadying the ship and getting points on the board in whatever way possible.

A more defensive and prudent style could be required initially before any drastic changes are made in terms of philosophy.
