Leeds United make official approach to seal Ilia Gruev transfer – Phil Hay

Leeds United have made an approach for Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev, according to Phil Hay.

Writing via The Athletic’s live transfer column (30 August, 11:50 am), Hay reported that the Whites had made a move for the 23-year-old as they focus on central midfielders before the window slams shut.

Boss Daniel Farke is keen on the Bulgaria international who is valued at £4million. He has been a part of Werder Bremen’s first team since breaking through their youth system in 2019.

Celtic’s Matt O’Riley and Rangers’ Glen Kamara are other midfielders who are being linked with a switch to Elland Road ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Act fast

While it will be fantastic for supporters at Elland Road to see that the club are still working hard in the transfer market and making approaches for their targets, they will also be aware that not much time remains in the window and officials at the club will need to act fast if they want to get deals across the line.

A new central midfielder is an absolute priority and to that end, Gruev would be a brilliant bit of business, due to his experience at the highest level. He primarily operates as a defensive midfielder and played 31 times in Germany’s top flight last season.

He could therefore bring some much-needed experience and add some steel to Farke’s midfield as they look to battle for promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League. Supporters who might not know much about the player must trust there there manager will make the correct call.

This is certainly one to watch now.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay says the club have the “necessary funds” to finally complete a deal that has been on the offing for “several weeks”
