Leeds United make new Ao Tanaka announcement
Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka continues to shine this season following Japan’s 2-0 win over Bahrain on Thursday.
Tanaka featured for Japan in the second half, coming on for Hidemasa Morita and playing 45 minutes in the FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Tanaka now has 32 international caps to his name and is an important part of Hajime Moriyasu’s team, with the Samurai Blue becoming the first to book their place at the 2026 World Cup.
Following Japan’s win, Leeds have posted on X regarding Tanaka and Japan.

Leeds’ message to Tanaka
Japan have booked their berth in the next edition of the FIFA World Cup, sitting top of the AFC qualification stage with 19 points in seven games.
Leeds were quick to react on X, writing: “Congrats to Ao Tanaka, who, after playing 45 minutes in Japan’s 2-0 win over Bahrain, has helped them become the first nation to book their place in the 2026 World Cup.”

The former Fortuna Dusseldorf player has been an important part of Daniel Farke’s side, playing 35 Championship games, scoring four times and assisting two.
Tanaka could next feature against Saudi Arabia in the AFC World Cup qualifiers at the Saitama Stadium.
Farke heavily relies on Tanaka at Leeds United
Between central midfielders Tanaka, Ilia Gruev and Joe Rothwell, the Japan international has been Farke’s first choice.
The 26-year-old has started 30 Championship games and repaid the faith shown by Farke with solid, all-round performances in the middle of the park.
The midfielder has been central to Leeds’ plans, and because of his ability to spray passes and move the ball around with elegance, Leeds have looked lethal when going forward.
With the West Yorkshire side in the driver’s seat for Premier League promotion, Tanaka’s presence has massively helped the Whites in their pursuit.
Once Tanaka and others return from the international break, Farke’s men will resume their Championship campaign against Swansea on 29 March.
Farke will be hoping that all the players on international duty return to Elland Road without picking up any injuries, as that could prove to be detrimental in the Premier League promotion race.
