Leeds United: Major signings could leave for reduced sums due to relegation clauses

There is a “concern” at Leeds United that signings could leave the club for reduced sums if they suffer relegation from the Premier League this season, according to The Athletic.

The report shares that many of the Leeds United squad including “major” signings will have clauses in their contracts enforcing wage reductions should they be relegated.

It isn’t clear what players have these said relegation clauses, however, it’s likely a relegation would see a host of top talents depart Elland Road.

“Many of the players in Leeds United’s squad, certainly the major signings completed since promotion in 2020, will have clauses in their contracts enforcing wage reductions if the club go down,” as quoted by The Athletic. (10 March)

“The concern would be the number of squad members who held clauses allowing them to leave for a reduced sum if falling into the Championship.”

Fearful?

Should fans be fearful of this dreary news? Maybe, but it’s pretty common for teams who go down to lose their prized assets for smaller sums.

Obviously, this is never good business but Leeds United should be pretty well placed to make an instant return to the Premier League should relegation occur.

That wishful thinking has obviously been heard before and every fan knows what happened then, but parachute payments alongside resale value, however little, would be massively beneficial.

The Whites also have an extremely young team, one that could surely bounce back from a woeful campaign and one far above the levels of the Championship.

More worrying than any of the above, is the fact that relegation could jeopardise a full takeover from the 49ers, something that would leave the team in a precarious position.

For now, this is all if, buts and maybes and the West Yorkshire faithful will be dreaming of some Javi Gracia miracles to come trotting their way.

Can the Spaniard save the day? Fans will have to wait and see.
