Leeds United loanee Ian Poveda in Blackburn Rovers injury limbo

Ian Poveda has been injured for much of this season but has recently returned to training with Leeds United as he looks to build his fitness.

The 22-year-old is still on loan at Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers who are still in the hunt for a playoff place and the former Manchester City youth player’s talent could help them majorly.

Rovers manager Tony Mowbray though is still undecided as to whether Poveda will play a part in their final handful of games or if he remains at Thorp Arch to fully recover.

“We’ll decide whether he comes and gets involved for the last few weeks of the season with us,” Mowbray said, as quoted by Leeds Live.

“We’ll then have to assess how he looks on the grass and whether we think he could help us or not. We’re still paying our contribution towards his salary so if he’s fit then he should be back and we’ll try and negotiate that he comes back next week.”

Underwhelming

It hasn’t been the season Poveda or anyone at Elland Road will have wanted and while injury has certainly curtailed his progress, he hasn’t done enough when he’s had the chance either.

Just eight appearances in the league and very few goal contributions to his name isn’t really good enough for an attacking player at any level and not something that will earn him a place in Jesse Marsch’s plans.

The American manager would be smart to try and offload Poveda in the summer while he could still get some kind of transfer fee for him because he should not be anywhere near the Whites’ first team.

With big investment hopefully coming in the summer and players far beyond the 22-year-old’s ability already at the club, there doesn’t appear to be a scenario where he would bully his way in.

The sooner he is scratched off the club’s books altogether the better because he is not Premier League standard or even close.

In other Leeds United news, Tony Dorigo has urged the football club to take advantage of a “gigantic” development this week.
