Leeds United loanee Daniel James wows BBC Sport pundit in Wales showdown v Latvia
BBC Wales pundit Helen Ward was wowed by the Leeds United loanee Daniel James after his assist for Wales’ opener in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Latvia on Tuesday [28 March].
James proved one of the Welsh’s best players in the opening minutes of the game, showcasing his electric pace and the ability to beat his marker.
The speed merchant, currently on loan at Fulham from Leeds this season, assisted Kieffer Moore from a terrific cross at the back post following some good wing play with Neco Williams.

And speaking on BBC’s live matchday blog of the game [20:32], former Wales and Chelsea Women striker Ward said: “Dan James’ pace frightens the life out of defenders and when he is in this sort of mood he is an outlet for Wales all day long.
“Neco Williams bursting down on the outside. If the two of them can do that more it is only going to play into Wales’ hands.”
Needs consistency
There’s no doubting James’ ability on his day but these kinds of showings have been too few and far between throughout his career, which means he’s no longer playing football at the top level as he would have liked.
James regularly turns on the style for Wales, because he’s a regular starter in Rob Page’s setup and has the belief of the manager and his teammates, but that isn’t the case at club level for either Leeds United or Fulham, and previously at Manchester United.

The desperately needs some consistency, belief and a run of games to unlock his full potential because when he does get going, he is a serial handful with his searing pace and ability to wreak havoc for opposing defenders.
His immediate future may lie away from Elland Road beyond this summer and if that is the case come June, James will need to take his next step with huge consideration as his lack of minutes at club level is hampering his career.
If he does remain at Elland Road, the summer will be the perfect period for him to knuckle down and prove his worth to the club once again.
In other Leeds United news, Whites midfielder Weston McKennie has been left gushing over what Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic did on international duty.
