Leeds United loanee Charlie Cresswell left out of Millwall squad in Rotherham draw
Gary Rowett has revealed that Charlie Cresswell wasn’t injured as the Leeds United loanee was left out of Millwall’s 1-1 draw with Rotherham United.
Cresswell featured at the weekend in Millwall’s 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers but was left out as the Lions reverted to a 4-2-3-1 system.
The 20-year-old has three goals and one assist during his time at The Den but has struggled defensively of late with Millwall conceding 17 Championship goals in 12 games.
However, the Lions boss did suggest that Cresswell could well come back into the starting lineup in a game or two.
“No, just a selection decision [when asked if he was injured],” said Rowett, as quoted by London News Online on 6 October.
“Sometimes people feel that if you’re not in the 18, something’s gone wrong. But don’t forget, the bench has to be able to impact the game, so you have to pick a bench accordingly.
“It might be that in a game or two, he comes back into the starting line-up, it’s as simple as that.”
Needs to improve
This is a really important period of Cresswell’s loan spell and he must ensure that he bounces back and improves his performance, particularly from a defensive standpoint. His attacking play is clearly a big bonus, but ultimately he is in the team for his defending.
It’s potentially a good decision by Rowett to remove the youngster from the firing line for a game or two. This is his first loan away from Elland Road and he will have tough times, but gaining experience in men’s first-team football will be absolutely invaluable for the 20-year-old when he returns.
Millwall, much like Leeds is a club where the fans will get behind the players but also let them know when they aren’t performing to the levels required of them. It will be interesting to see how Cresswell does react to being left out, even more so with the Lions picking up a positive result on the road.
