Leeds United-linked Todd Cantwell wanted by Tottenham Hotspur

Todd Cantwell was reportedly considered by Leeds United last summer before they signed Raphinha and is now being tracked by Tottenham Hotspur.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the 23-year-old Norwich City central midfielder is set to leave in January.

He claims that Tottenham have tracked him in the past and there also is interest in his services from Newcastle.

The report reads, “He caught the eye in Norwich’s 2019-20 Premier League campaign, attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool and was seriously considered by Leeds before they chose to sign Raphinha.

“Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is said to like Cantwell but early indications suggest he would only contemplate a move if the price was reduced, while Tottenham are another side to have tracked him in the past and there are thought to be high-placed Championship teams who may look to recruit Cantwell on loan with an obligation to buy if they achieve promotion.”

It is understood that Cantwell will be available for a fee in excess of £15million.

Worth pursuing?

Cantwell is a quality player who has been linked with Leeds several times in the past.

However, this season, he has failed to replicate those kinds of performances that would put him in contention for a move to a bigger club.

There have been clubs linked but none are quite taking their interest to the next level, much like Leeds.

The Whites are looking for an attacking midfielder who’s capable of playing that number 8 or 10 role.

On paper, Cantwell appears to fit the bill perfectly, but practically, he may not be too high on Marcelo Bielsa’s wishlist this month.

Ideally, Leeds should look at someone like John Swift who’s been performing exceedingly well in the Championship for Reading and is more experienced than Cantwell as well.

In other Leeds United news, the club are well poised to sign a ‘Magnificent’ centre mid in January with a European club open to his sale
