Leeds United: Leicester City star Wout Faes shares ‘crazy’ Championship promotion verdict
Wout Faes has admitted he was stunned by the level of quality in the Championship, insisting it is “crazy” that four clubs are still competing for the title after Leeds United took the top spot.
The Leicester City defender was asked about competition from Leeds, Southampton and Ipswich, and admitted to being particularly surprised by the competition from Ipswich.
He went on to share that he believed his side will overcome their blip in form to achieve their goal of promotion to the Premier League, as well as winning the Championship.
Speaking to Sudinfo Sports [20 March], Faes shared: “This is a first in the history of the Championship. It’s crazy that we’re still down to four clubs for the direct climb.
“There are the three Premier League descendants, which is normal, but also Ipswich whose season is impressive. They came from League One and are already fighting for the Premier League.
“Before I was there, I didn’t watch the Championship too much. Now I see that, even if we go to a ‘small’ team, these are difficult matches with full stadiums and opponents who give their all against the leader.
“We must continue to do what we have been doing since the start of the season, we will achieve our goal: to get back into the Premier League. This is the main objective but given our position, we also want to win the Championship.”
Leeds United mounting strong challenge to Leicester City
Despite having moved into first place, Leeds know they still have a fight on their hands if they want to win automatic promotion from the Championship, or perhaps even the title, given the standard set by Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich.
Faes’ comments show a defiant mentality from Leicester, who will be keen to reclaim top spot with their game in hand over Leeds and will continue their push towards winning the Championship this season.
Ally McCoist was equally stunned by the state of play at the top of the Championship as he insisted the promotion places are still wide open for the competing clubs to take advantage after it looked like Leicester had already won it.

Going into the final stretch of the season after the international break, all four of the top teams will know they stand a chance of making the automatic promotion, and two will have to enter the playoffs. Both Leeds and Leicester will be determined to finish as high as possible.
