Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo may be injured again

LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross suggests Junior Firpo may have another injury after the Leeds United left-back failed to appear in the squad that drew with Leicester on Sunday.

Firpo, 25, was substituted off 31 minutes into the Under-21s’ Premier League 2 defeat to Arsenal at Elland Road on October 29.

The ex-Barcelona left-back was likely to be regaining match fitness in that game. However, Cross has suggested that due to him not playing against Norwich and Leicester, he could be injured again.

“[Bielsa] hasn’t said this as such, but I can’t work out if Firpo hurt himself in that Friday night game here, because he came off at half an hour, and obviously didn’t then go to Norwich,” said Cross in a Facebook Live video for LeedsLive, as quoted by This Is Futbol.

“I think we all just assumed that it was because it was too close to Norwich, but then obviously missed today. And the inference is that there’s either a new problem or he had maybe a setback in that Friday game.”

Not again

This is why Leeds United needed to sign two left-backs in the summer, rather than just one.

While Stuart Dallas and, as shown versus Leicester, Pascal Struijk can do jobs at left-back, they are better in other positions in the squad and we look better when they are there.

Struijk’s probably been our best centre-back this season and Dallas has looked way more comfortable either in the midfield or playing as a right-back.

Firpo had a slow start to life at Leeds but just before his injury, his form was improving. For him to have another setback would be a crushing blow for the summer signing.

Marcelo Bielsa pushes his squad to the limits – we know that and we have no issue with it. However, if he’s doing that, it wouldn’t hurt to have more back-up options or at least a youngster who flits in between the Under-23s and the senior squad.

We really hope Firpo is fine before the international break is over because Tottenham have the potential to expose us if they’re on top of their game on November 21.

In other Leeds United news, this big-money player may have to be axed amid an injury development at Elland Road.
