Leeds United ‘keeping close watch’ on Anderlecht’s Sergio Gomez

Leeds United are part of a crowded chase for Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez, with Victor Orta very interested, reports Team Talk.

James Marshment first reported the exclusive on his personal Twitter account that sources were telling them the club were “keeping a close watch” on the 21-year-old.

The Whites need support down the left as Junior Firpo has struggled since his arrival from Barcelona, and is now out with injury.

The Spaniard is also a former Barcelona player, and is reportedly interesting the likes of Real Madrid, Atalanta, Lyon and Ajax.

Team Talk had reported that Chelsea were interested in the under-21 international in January as well.

Despite being nominally a defender Gomez has contributed five goals and 10 assists to his side in the league this season.

Major help

With Firpo’s struggles this term capped off by a fairly significant injury, this is exactly the sort of move the club needs to make.

It is encouraging that Orta is making plans for the future already, and the hope for the summer must be that it is less frustrating that the January window.

This team needs an overhaul, as Marcelo Bielsa got close to the maximum out of most of it.

Recent signings have been more hit and miss, Raphinha aside, but Jesse Marsch is going to need reinforcements.

For a player which transfermarkt values at just over £8million it seems like a sensible choice.

The Belgian league is not the Premier League, but an ability to be involved in that many goals from left-back cannot be ignored.

Having moved from the reserve ranks at the Camp Nou, to graduate into the Borussia Dortmund first team, he appears to have found his feet in the Jupiler Pro League, and could be ready to make the step up.

The Whites need to stay in the Premier League and set about the task of refreshing a squad that has looked stretched to its limit at times this year.
