Leeds United 'keep or sell' verdict shared on Joe Gelhardt

Leeds United loanees Charlie Cresswell, Lewis Bate and Joe Gelhardt are “forecast” to have a future at the club, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Donnohue.

The trio have all been playing away from Elland Road on a temporary basis this season.

Cresswell and Bate spent the entire campaign at Millwall and Oxford United respectively, with Gelhardt spending the latter half of the season at Sunderland.

“Leeds have several players who’ve spent the 2022/23 season – or part of it – out on loan,” Donnohue wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“The likes of Charlie Cresswell [pictured], Lewis Bate and Joe Gelhardt are forecast to have a future at Elland Road, meanwhile Ian Poveda, Dan James and Helder Costa are all still on the club’s books. Decisions will need to be taken whether to keep or sell.”

Decision time

A long, long list of decisions need to be made at Leeds this summer, both on and off the pitch.

Ownership, managerial and recruitment issues need to be resolved, and those areas may just take priority over the first-team futures of young trio Cresswell, Bate and Joe Gelhardt.

It is both an unfortunate and exciting time to be a Leeds youngster, with the players potentially missing out on playing Premier League football next season if the Whites are relegated.

But that could result in the youngsters all being handed major roles for the club in the Championship next season.

They could, of course, decided that their future is away from Elland Road, but any such decisions will be made after the fate of Sam Allardyce’s men is decided.

Leeds host Tottenham at Elland Road on Sunday (28 May) on what is the final day of the season, with the club unfortunately needing to keep an eye on other results as well as their own.
