Leeds United are “keen” on a summer move for Borussia Dortmund’s attacking left-back Raphael Guerreiro on a free transfer, 90min reports.

The Whites were linked with a move prior to the January transfer window but the Portuguese international remained at Signal Iduna Park.

But with his contract set to expire at the end of the season he is attracting wide-spread interest in a move from England, Spain and Germany.

The 29-year-old is credited as being “one of Europe’s most complete attacking full-backs” at the Bundesliga side, where he has racked up 38 goals and 45 assists since 2016.

Among the likely competitors for his signature in England are Newcastle and Aston Villa, while Wolves and even runaway Championship leaders Burnley could be in the mix.

Guerreiro has 61 caps for Portugal and won the European Championships in 2016, playing the full 90 minutes in the final.

The answer

The Dortmund man would represent the kind of answer at left-back that Leeds United fans have been desperate for through multiple windows.

And if he were to arrive on a free transfer it would be an excellent bit of business, even if Junior Firpo is finally starting to find some form at Elland Road.

Whether Victor Orta can pull this one off despite his position weakening behind the scenes remains to be seen, but with the club being linked to a move for so long there should have been some groundwork put done over some months.

Clearly, coming out on top in the relegation battle is a prerequisite to being successful in what is sure to be a heated race for his signature.

Newcastle are in contention for European football, although their form has trailed off at the wrong time, and depending on who emerges from La Liga and the Bundesliga it might be a deal that remains out of reach.

But the Whites appear to be prominent in this pursuit, and have overcome interested European and Premier League parties to bring in some notable signings this season.

Left-back has been a problem position for a long time in West Yorkshire, and while Firpo’s belated emergence has calmed matters of late there is always room to upgrade.

In other Leeds United news, another January transfer target will be available for next to nothing if Newcastle succeed in poaching a current first-team regular.
