Leeds United keen on Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo
Leeds United are keen on signing Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo this summer, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.
The Elland Road side are looking to bring in a new player in the position amid uncertainty over the future of Gjanni Alioski, but they face stiff competition for the Spaniard.
Nevertheless, Firpo is a strong candidate for the role, and Smyth claims his attacking ability is one of the main reasons Leeds feel he would fit into head coach Marcelo Bielsa’s style of football [YEP].
It is understood that Leeds also want a speedy recolution with Firpo so they can move onto other targets if they’re unsuccessful.
Perfect Alioski replacement
The North Macedonian international is out of contract on Thursday, and it remains to be seen whether he would sign a new deal in the coming days.
Leeds are apparently ready to move on, though, and Firpo could be the perfect replacement for Alioski.
However, with Napoli and some Champions League outfits keen on the out-of-favour Barca defender, we do not see us realistically pipping them to his signature.
That said, nothing can be ruled out, and the Whites always have a chance when director of football Victor Orta wants something.
Firpo can also play on the left wing, at right-back, at centre-back and in a defensive midfield role, and Bielsa could be licking his lips at the prospects of having such a player in his squad.
The former Spain youth international has only bagged two goals and two assists in 34 games across the La Liga and Champions League for the Catalans, but that is largely down to him playing second fiddle to Jordi since joining in 2019.
In his last season with Real Betis, Firpo bagged three goals and five assists in 28 appearances.
He wants regular football next term after a stagnated international career, and a move to Leeds could be perfect for him.
