Leeds United: Kaveh Solhekol shares Leicester points deduction update
Leicester City have been charged for an alleged breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and could be hit with a points deduction amid their ongoing title fight with Leeds United.
However, as explained by Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, that deduction would not be in place until next season if they were promoted to the Premier League.
He went on to explain that he understands why their title rivals would be frustrated by the development, as the controversy surrounding the rules has been highlighted again.
Speaking live on Sky Sports, as shared on X, Solhekol explained: “What could be really controversial in this case is: Leicester City are in the Championship at the moment. They’re fighting for promotion, they’re second in the table just behind Leeds with nine games to play.
“But there’s the very real prospect that, if they are found guilty, we know what happens in these cases, teams are hit with a points deduction.
“We have the very real prospect that, if they’re found guilty, if they get a points deduction, if they’re promoted, they could start next season in the Premier League on -4, -6, -8 points.
“These alleged breaches happened over a three-year period when Leicester were in the Premier League, so it is alleged that they broke Premier League rules.
“It isn’t to do with the EFL, but I can understand why some of their competitors in the EFL would be saying they had an unfair competitive advantage because of this. I think it puts into sharp focus how controversial these rules have turned out to be.”
How will Leicester City charge impact Leeds United?
It has been said that Leeds could sue Leicester if Daniel Farke’s side fails to reach the automatic promotion places or go up via the playoffs this season as a result of their profit and sustainability breach, with the investigation set to begin.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire also recently shared that the points deduction is unlikely to take hold until next season, but claimed that if Leicester fail to earn promotion, they will be hit with a deduction in the Championship.
It was originally mooted that, as a result of the points deduction handed to Everton in the Premier League, Leeds were among several clubs intending to take the matter to court over potential damages following their relegation.
Now, given the focus on Leicester, all Leeds can do is hope for some complacency or frustration from their opponents and look to take advantage of any possible slip – as they won’t be handed help by the authorities this season.
