Leeds United: Kalvin Phillips takes in jest swipe at Luke Ayling via Instagram

Kalvin Phillips hasn’t forgotten about his former Leeds United teammates since his summer move and has taken an in jest swipe at one of them.

Luke Ayling posted a picture on Instagram of his return to action after a long time out with a facial injury which resulted in him wearing a distinctive black mask against Aston Villa.

The 31-year-old came on in place of Rasmus Kristensen with just over 20 minutes to go to help the 10-man Leeds United salvage a point from the game.

“Always great to be back playing at Elland Road,” Ayling wrote as his caption only to be met with “Still a 10 out of 10,” from Phillips in the replies.

The England international left Thorp Arch this summer to join Manchester City but he is now out injured for a significant period of time and will therefore be likely to miss the World Cup.

Wrong move

Phillips is probably regretting making the move from Yorkshire to Manchester now after a horrid period of time for him with injuries running rife.

There is no way to know exactly if things would have been different at Elland Road had he chosen to stay with the club that brought him through their academy but it couldn’t have been much worse.

He was never, ever going to be first choice under Pep Guardiola if he was fit anyway because Rodri has been sensational for City ever since he signed to be the rock at the base of the midfield.

The best he could have hoped for was minutes off the bench or in rotated teams but now he has hamstrung himself to the physio’s bench, he can’t even get that.

Jesse Marsch would probably choose not to take him back if the opportunity arose now anyway because Marc Roca and Tyler Adams have quickly developed a superb relationship in midfield that is difficult to separate.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites boss always seems one step ahead of the rest after he revealed what he did in training before the Villa clash.
