Leeds United: Joel Piroe left ‘fuming’ by Ethan Ampadu in Hull City victory at Elland Road
Joel Piroe was left “fuming” after Leeds United teammate Ethan Ampadu sent him away from an argument with Crysencio Summerville during the victory over Hull City, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via Twitter on 1 April during the 3-1 win as the Whites forward was angered to have been overruled for the 88th minute penalty which put the home side ahead at Elland Road.
The Dutch winger had been brought down to win the kick and Piroe had only come off the bench moments before, which led to a disagreement at the penalty spot before Welsh international Ampadu stepped in to decide matters.
Summerville subsequently dispatched what looked to be the winner, before Dan James’ 97th-minute third made the result safe from long distance.
Smyth wrote prior to the kick: “Piroe and Summerville arguing over it. Summerville is taking over and Piroe is sent back to the edge of the area by Ampadu. Piroe is fuming.”
Crysencio Summerville prevails in Leeds United dispute
This wasn’t the first time that a late and potentially deciding penalty has been the subject of some disagreement this season and Patrick Bamford could probably have explained to Piroe why he was best leaving Summerville to take it.
The Englishman had gone off for Mateo Joseph in the win over the Tigers by that time but it was he who won and then failed to convert one in similar circumstances right after coming on in the defeat at Stoke City on 25 October, which at the time looked to some like it would go as far as to see him eventually leave the club.
To both his and Piroe’s credit they were determined to contribute to their side despite going through periods of being overtaken by teammates in prominence, even if it would have been more sensible not to push themselves forward.
It is somewhat of a surprise that Daniel Farke hasn’t made 100% clear who should take kicks under which exact circumstances after the fall out from Bamford’s miss.
But it is a positive that this time rational minds ultimately prevailed via Ampadu’s intervention and Summerville scored to secure three crucial points in the race for automatic promotion.
It is unlikely that Piroe’s upset lasted very long once the win was in the bag but shows the competitive spirit is high within the squad during a highly-pressured point in the season.
In other Leeds United news, surgery shouldn’t stop a Whites star from taking an impressive record off another Farke favourite.
