Leeds United: Joe Gelhardt sends message to Kalvin Phillips as West Ham transfer news emerges on Friday

Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt sent a message to former Whites player Kalvin Phillips after his confirmed transfer to West Ham in the Premier League.

The Hammers confirmed the signing on Friday 26 January of the former Elland Road fan-favourite midfielder on a temporary loan deal until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old leaves the Etihad, almost two years on from his departure from West Yorkshire, due to his limited minutes under Pep Guardiola this season.

Taking to his Instagram account on Friday (26 January), Phillips sent a message to the Irons fans after his confirmed transfer to East London.

He wrote: “Delighted to sign for West Ham for the remainder of the season. Can’t wait to get started!”

And Gelhardt, who’s been linked with a transfer away from Elland Road this season (GIVEMESPORT, 18 January), sent a message to his former teammate: “All the best lad.”

Wants his own move

It’s been a mixed time for Gelhardt since he arrived at Leeds from Wigan Athletic three years ago after breaking onto the scene with some impressive performances for the Lancashire club.

But since making his first-team debut against Fulham in the Carabao Cup in 2021, the 21-year-old has been largely underwhelming despite showing early promise.

The forward hasn’t been completely short of chances after playing in up to 49 games for the club, having scored just three goals and laid on seven assists during that time.

During his tough time in West Yorkshire, Gelhardt has seen players like Phillips seek greener pastures but could take solace from the fact that the grass may not be always greener.

However, in Gelhardt’s case, he certainly wants a new garden altogether and that may not come this month given the amount of clubs he’s been linked with in recent weeks.

After Mateo Joseph’s new contract this month, the message may not have been any clearer for the young striker to grab his career by the scruff of the neck and move on.
