Phil Hay: Leeds United tactics under Jesse Marsch are cause for concern in Premier League
Jesse Marsch’s tactics are highlighting defensive frailties and openness to counterattacks at Leeds United all over again, according to Phil Hay.
It’s something that has been a problem for the Whites for some time now and a cause for concern that has continually not been addressed, first of all by Marcelo Bielsa.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast on Monday (7 November), he admitted that Leeds’ defensive performance against Bournemouth was “extremely concerning”.
“There were parts of the performance that were extremely concerning,” he said speaking on The Phil Hay Podcast.
“Some of the defensive displays were abysmal, particularly Bournemouth’s third goal. They were so open at the back, they are starting to concede goals at a heavy rate, given one of the big concerns when Marsch became coach was how strong they were defensively, that hasn’t been eradicated.
“Tactically and structurally there are things about the team making them vulnerable”.
Tactics or personnel?
Looking past the glitz and glamour of last-minute wins Hay is right on this one, Leeds have looked defensively frail for far too long now.
More needs to be done to improve this and Marsch has the chance to rectify this during the World Cup break.
The American can’t make the same mistakes as Bielsa, and Leeds need to avoid becoming a one-dimensional team again, as enjoyable as the football can be to watch.
No one wants the club to be relegated and the team need to sure up defensively to avoid this.
The club must invest in some central defenders who are comfortable with playing a high line, or Marsch’s tactical prowess moving the ball forward goes to complete waste.
Is Liam Cooper up to the job of doing this? There are no doubts he’s stood up recently, but the entire back four needs to be stronger throughout games.
It would be nice to see how Marsch’s tactics fared with a few defensive reinforcements brought in this January, his current personnel just may not suit his playing style.
