Jesse Marsch reveals agonising Cody Gakpo transfer developments to Leeds United
PSV Eindhoven phenom Cody Gakpo was painfully close to joining Leeds United this summer after head coach Jesse Marsch revealed it all on the Men in Blazers podcast.
Gakpo has since gone on to take the FIFA World Cup by storm, inevitably raising his price tag even higher than it already was.
Marsch confessed that Leeds were “99.9%” done on a deal with PSV for Gakpo this summer after Victor Orta flew to Holland to meet the forward’s family.
“First it’s difficult for us at Leeds because Gakpo has gotten out of our price range,” said Marsch on the Men in Blazers podcast.
“We were so close to securing a transfer for him in summer, I mean it was like it was so close and now obviously it is disappointing for us.
“Our sports director (Orta) was in Holland meeting with the family, had agreed on terms and everything, was talking with PSV, we were 99.9% so I felt bad for Victor and all the effort he put into it.
“I’m also happy I talked to Cody in the process and I’m happy for him to have had so much success at the World Cup and show everyone how good he is.”
If you don’t laugh.
If you don’t laugh you might cry at these comments from Marsch, it’s painful to think Gakpo was so close to being a Leeds United player this summer.
The Dutch forward is exactly what Marsch’s team are currently missing, a forward with poaching prowess who would undoubtedly bang them in for any Premier League side.
Nevertheless, it seems any future moves for Gakpo will be off too after Marsch said the striker is likely out of Leeds United’s price range now.
Annoyingly, Gakpo could now land at one of the Premier League’s juggernaut teams which will make this transfer blunder even more embarrassing.
It’s still unclear why Gakpo chose against moving to Leeds, it must have been a drastic change in decision considering it was “99.9%” done.
The only real silver lining to take from this for the Whites is that their recruitment system is obviously spot on if they are scouting players like Gakpo.
In other Leeds United news, we can exclusively reveal that a takeover by the 49ers could be done within weeks.
