Leeds United: Jesse Marsch makes ‘heartbroken’ admission before MNF on Sky Sports

Jesse Marsch has admitted he was “heartbroken” to see his time at Leeds United come to an end after being sacked by the club last year.

Speaking on a preview of Monday Night Football, where he was a guest of the show, shown on Sky Sports News (19 February), the former Whites boss said he really enjoyed his time at Elland Road and that the team were “fantastic” to work with as they put everything into being successful.

The American revealed that it was “hard to walk away”, but that he was thankful for the opportunity and that he learned a lot from his time in West Yorkshire.

“I really enjoyed my team at Leeds,” said Marsch. “The team was great, fantastic to work with. I always felt like in every way everyone at Thorp Arch was putting everything in to us being successful and, yeah, I was heartbroken.

“It was hard to walk away and it takes time for me, I think for all managers to reflect and recharge the energy to go again. In the end, I’m really thankful for the opportunity and I learned a lot from the process.”

Jesse Marsch put everything into succeeding at Leeds United

There is no questioning the enthusiasm and the efforts Marsch put in to try and ensure his time at Leeds was a success, but it just wasn’t to be.

He showed so much passion from the sidelines and, at times, that boiled over as he was an incredibly animated character.

While he was in charge for the vast majority of the season that saw the Whites relegated to the Championship, it was decision-making from the people above him that largely landed the club in trouble.

Jesse Marsch was animated on the touchline for Leeds United.

That is an era the fans are glad to have put behind them now as the club goes in pursuit of an immediate return to the Premier League under the management of Daniel Farke.

They are currently well-placed to achieve that target, but if they do make the return to the top flight, they will be keen to ensure the same mistakes aren’t made as last time by the previous ownership at Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, a journalist believes a marquee Whites signing will be looking to use what’s happened to him as “motivation” at Elland Road.
