Leeds United: Jermaine Beckford shocked by what happened against Coventry – ‘What on Earth’

Jermaine Beckford was left in disbelief at Joel Piroe’s failure to convert a late chance as Leeds United lost 2-1 away at Coventry City.

Goals from Ellis Simms and Haji Wright saw the Whites trail 2-0 early in the second half, but Piroe was introduced in the 66th minute and pulled one back 10 minutes later.

However, his composure seemed to desert him when presented with an opportunity to net the equaliser in stoppage time, scuffing his effort towards the bottom corner and allowing Coventry goalkeeper Bradley Collins to save, preserving the hosts’ win and condemning the Whites to defeat.

Leeds legend Beckford could hardly believe what he saw, saying to LUTV: “Wasteful finishing cost us, ultimately.

“We had two great opportunities – Joel Piroe as well, came on and scored a brilliant goal, great composure in front of goal.

“And then his second opportunity, he almost snatched at it, couldn’t make the right contact, not the right connection with it, and that was quite surprising.

“When we were in the studio I was thinking ‘What on Earth has just happened here? It must have been a tackle’.

“It’s just one of those things, it’s an opportunity lost especially with Leicester winning and Ipswich dropping points as well.”

Leeds United lose ground in the promotion race

Victory over Mark Robins’ men would have lifted Leeds to the top of the Championship standings following Ipswich Town’s earlier loss against Norwich City.

However, their missed opportunity against Coventry sees them slip down to third, two points behind new leaders Leicester City, who also boast a game in hand.

Leeds dominated the ball in customary fashion, recording 70 per cent possession, but were far more open than they have been in recent months, facing 11 shots, five of which were on target [FotMob].

There were no personnel issues to point to on this occasion either, with Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon partnered at the heart of defence with Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev paired ahead of them in midfield.

Daniel Farke will hope to pinpoint the source of his side’s wobbly display and address it ahead of a pair of home clashes at Elland Road with Sunderland and then Blackburn Rovers.

In other Leeds United news, Atletico Madrid are reportedly eyeing up a key member of Farke’s squad.
