Leeds United: Jeff Stelling stunned by Ipswich live on talkSPORT in new promotion claim

Jeff Stelling admitted he has been stunned by the form of Ipswich Town and the way they have kept pace with “juggernauts” Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton.

The legendary broadcaster insisted the fans would have settled for a mid-table finish after their promotion from League One last year given their financial disparity.

Being able to keep pace with the likes of Leeds, Leicester and Southampton has put Ipswich top of the league going into the games on 1 April, one point above Daniel Farke’s men.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [06:55], Stelling said: “Leeds, Leicester and Southampton are juggernauts. Ipswich haven’t got that sort of financial funding. I think most Ipswich fans would have settled for the top half of the table.

“The most impressive thing to me was that they had a really indifferent run and you thought that would be it, that would be them done, but not a bit of it the way they came back. It’s an absolutely brilliant story.”

Ipswich to push Leeds United all the way in promotion battle

With just seven games left to play, we are still no closer to knowing the outcome of the title and promotion races, with Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich all having occupied the top spot at different stages in the last two weeks.

After dropping into second place, Leeds know they still have a fight on their hands if they want to win automatic promotion from the Championship, or perhaps even the title, given the standard set by their competition.

Leicester defender Wout Faes, meanwhile, spoke out about the “crazy” promotion race but insisted the Foxes are still as determined as ever to win the league and the promotion to the Premier League that comes along with it.

Going into the final stretch of the season, all four of the top teams will know they stand a chance of making the automatic promotion, and two will have to enter the uncertainty of the playoffs.
