Leeds United injury update emerges on Wilfried Gnonto after hamstring issue

Leeds United face a nervous wait after Wilfried Gnonto withdrew from Italy U21s’ 7-0 victory over San Marino with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Leeds United winger was forced to come off in Italy’s EURO U21 qualifier and the club now awaits a verdict on the extent of Gnonto’s injuries, according to Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Azzurri’s next fixture is against Ireland on Tuesday 21 November, which could be a telling sign as to whether Gnonto’s injury is serious or not.

Daniel Farke and his staff will be impatiently waiting for an update about their skilful winger, as it is unclear as to whether he has travelled with the squad to Cork, Ireland.

Missing a key player

If the player has travelled with the rest of the squad, that will reassure the club and fanbase that he is fit enough for Leeds’ upcoming fixtures.

Gnonto may even start the crucial qualifier over Ireland, who are separated by just one point in Group A.

However, Gnonto was forced to miss four weeks of the season due to a knee injury and subsequent surgery, and has found it difficult in recent weeks to reclaim his spot in the starting XI.

With Dan James and Crysencio Summerville both in the form of their lives, there is little to no space for the Italy international in Leeds’ line-up and it could be a frustrating season as an impact substitute for him.

The 20-year-old has made just six league starts this season, playing just 43 minutes in Leeds’ last three games. However, it is important to note that only two months have passed since his surgery and only time will tell how key a role Gnonto will play this season.
