Leon Wobschall has claimed the return of Ethan Ampadu could be "as major as anything" for Leeds United ahead of the January window.

The Welshman has been out of action since the end of September having suffered a knee injury in the early stages of the campaign.

The Whites have coped in his absence for the large part but his return could prove crucial for various reasons with Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Wobschall identifying his versatility as a reason why the Whites might not enter the market this winter.

"The successful return to action of Ampadu would only have positive ramifications for Leeds," the journalist said for Yorkshire Evening Post.

"It could be as major as anything in the winter window. It would provide a trusted option in the heart of defence or in front of the back four.

"It could also free up, in theory, one of United’s current deep-lying midfielders - namely Ao Tanaka or Joe Rothwell - to be pushed upfield into a number ten role, if needs be. And avoid bringing in a ‘ten’ from outside potentially."

Ethan Ampadu return at Leeds United will boost promotion hopes

Ampadu is a phenomenal player and although the Whites have generally coped without him, his return will provide a massive boost.

Leeds have a squad full of talent but the Welshman is arguably at the top of that list when fit and his ability to play in various positions can only be a good thing for Daniel Farke.

His composure on the ball is often paramount to breaking down teams that like to get bodies behind the ball and Leeds don't really have any player who possesses the same attributes as him either on or off the ball.

Of course, his return won't affect the club's burning need for a striker in January but could ease any concerns from a midfield depth perspective.

Farke's side have every chance of achieving promotion this campaign and keeping players like Ampadu fit for the remainder could prove crucial.

Ampadu's best-case scenario would be a mid-December return.
