Leeds United in line for Luis Sinisterra transfer profit from Bournemouth ‘traumatic twist’ as deal details emerge – Graham Smyth

Luis Sinisterra can only leave Leeds United permanently as part of his Bournemouth move if the Whites remain in the Championship, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said on the Inside Elland Road podcast (7 September) that the Colombian winger will cost a fee “in excess” of what Leeds paid for him a year ago if he ends up being bought by the Cherries next summer, but only if Daniel Farke is unsuccessful in his promotion push.

Smyth called the episode which saw the 24-year-old head to the Vitality after the transfer deadline, with Jaidon Anthony coming the other way on a loan move of his own, as a “dramatic” and “traumatic twist” to the end of the club’s window, but the details appear relatively positive.

He said (10m 5s): “They’ve protected themselves a little bit in the Sinisterra deal in so far as there is an option to buy but only if Leeds remain a Championship club going into next season.

“And they’ll get a fee in excess of what they paid for him. So they paid something like £21million, it’ll be a fee in excess of that, if they don’t go up, coming their way next summer, if of course Bournemouth activate that and want to take him.”

Best of a bad situation

Since Sinisterra and his agent appeared ready for the situation to get quite ugly it meant the prospect of him remaining a going concern at Elland Road had reduced hugely.

In the circumstances it appears the club have managed to rescue what they could from the situation fairly well, in that they brought in Anthony who is a proven Championship performer as cover, and should benefit financially if Sinisterra never returns.

The winger was one of a number of players who fans would have feared leaving following relegation, but the silver lining in such instances was expected to be a major influx of cash.

As it turned out only Tyler Adams brought in any notable fee, after a release clause squabble of his own before a Bournemouth move [The Athletic, 20 August].

So many others have left on loan in the hope that a major fee will be on the cards next summer, but with Sinisterra it seems that the club will definitely either make a profit in a year’s time, or get a quality player back for their return to the Premier League, with Anthony thrown into the bargain in the mean time.

At this stage it seems hard to imagine Sinisterra being reintegrated into the side if the Whites are back in the top flight given recent events, but the same seemed true of Willy Gnonto only a couple of weeks ago and that has been achieved.

So, having had to see the Colombian go before the window shut it looks like Leeds are safe from ultimately losing out in a big way, which is a small mercy in the circumstances.

In other Leeds United news, contract news has emerged after the Whites pushed for an eight-figure transfer late int the window.
