Leeds United: Hull City send official message to fans ahead of Elland Road showdown
Hull City have sent a message to their fans, reminding them not to bring Turkey flags or shirts to Elland Road ahead of a clash with Leeds United on Monday (1 April).
Wanting to show a sign of respect for Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, both sets of fans will come together to remember the lives of both Leeds fans after the tragic events in Istanbul 24 years ago.
Despite multiple decades passing since the events, the loss is still felt around Elland Road, something that should be acknowledged by any visiting fans.
Hull City took to X, posting via its official account, writing: “We politely ask supporters to be respectful and refrain from bringing Turkiye flags or shirts with them, as we stand with Leeds in remembering the tragic events in Istanbul, 24 years ago.”
Hull City send timely reminder ahead of Leeds United clash
Though many years have passed, the loss of a loved one is always felt, and the lives of Loftus and Speight live on in the memory of every Leeds fan.
It is a huge sign of respect shown by the Tigers ahead of the clash on Monday, one that will be appreciated by the home support at Elland Road.
Of course, there will always be banter between rivalling football fans, but some can take it too far sometimes, and there will be a slight worry the same could happen between Leeds and Hull.
There is a lot of passion in the world of football, especially on a night when one team is fighting for the Championship title, and the other aiming to finish in the playoff spots.
Despite being six points behind sixth-place Norwich City, Liam Rosenior’s side will not count themselves out of the race for promotion to the Premier League.
And the Whites will be hoping to keep up the pressure on Leicester City and Ipswich Town. The Foxes were able to beat the Canaries in Monday’s lunchtime kick-off game, while the Tractor Boys are also battling their hardest for automatic promotion.
