Leeds United hope for Willy Gnonto reset as contract update emerges at Elland Road
Phil Hay has suggested that a new contract for Willy Gnonto could be the reset that the Leeds United winger needs.
Hay shared the verdict as he explained that the Elland Road club have been speaking to the young Italian over a new deal.
From his 24 appearances in all competitions this season, the 20-year-old has one goal and one assist to his name so far.
“With a few days of the window to go and in the absence of any signings, Leeds’ January squad-building has focused exclusively on the renewal of contracts: Archie Gray tied down to 2028 and Mateo Joseph accepting an extension to the same date,” Hay wrote for The Athletic.
“The club have been speaking to Gnonto about following suit and are optimistic that he will, an agreement which would do no harm in making it look as if Gnonto is not here under duress.
“Perhaps a new deal will be the reset he needs.”
Bright future
Gnonto has already proven that he can compete at the very top level, with the 20-year-old shining in the Premier League last season immediately after his move to England.
But sadly those displays have not been witnessed for quite some time, with the winger struggling to find his best form at Elland Road. He has, however, failed to land regular football under Daniel Farke, with injuries certainly playing their part.
But there remains hope that the attacker can soon return to his best and become a key player for the club, and that is very understandable given how he is in the very early stages of his career.
It is no surprise then that Leeds want to extend his deal at Elland Road, but a huge offer for the winner before the January transfer window closes would certainly test their resolve.

But the deadline is rapidly approaching, and it would be a huge risk for a club to launch a big-money offer for a player that is out of form.
