Leeds United: Hollywood actor celebrates Championship feat after Millwall clash

Henry Winkler celebrated Leeds United going top of the Championship after beating Millwall at Elland Road.

The Hollywood actor took to Twitter on 17 March after the 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from Willy Gnonto and Dan James, took the Whites above Leicester who were playing Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Winkler, 78, famous for playing The Fonz in Happy Days as well as roles such as Coach Klein in The Waterboy, is a Leeds supporter thanks to Yorkshire-born actor Jessica Barden who is married to his son Max [Yorkshire Evening Post].

Winkler wrote: “In honor of our daughter in law.. we celebrate LUFC being Top of the Table!!!”

There is a significant US following of well-known figures now that the 49ers have completed a full takeover with investors including a number of sports stars from the NBA and the NFL among others.

Winkler got in ahead of the rush and made clear his support for the Whites a few years ago but the more success that arrives at Elland Road the greater the interest on the other side of the Atlantic will likely grow.

Leeds may have gone top because the Foxes weren’t in league action this weekend, but heading into an international break at the summit should provide a psychological boost even if it is from one game more played.

Were it not for the chaos that characterised the start of the season, at least until the close of the summer transfer window, the Whites might be clear at the top by now.

That also might be the case if the EFL were to impose a points deduction, the possibility of which as been floated by Phil Hay.

The squad always should have been strong enough to mount a challenge once it restocked following an exodus in the wake of relegation.

But with Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton accumulating points at some rates themselves it is still no small achievement for Farke to make up the ground on the leaders and finally go top in the hunt for automatic promotion and potentially the title.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites could be at risk of a spending breach upon return to the Premier League.
