Leeds United hold ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ on Weston McKennie ahead of £34.5m decision
Leeds United have a “gentlemen’s agreement” in place with Juventus over the permanent signing of Weston McKennie, according to Italian news outlet Ilbianconero.
There are a number of stipulations which could impact the American’s future at Elland Road, but it’s widely accepted the Whites are obliged to purchase McKennie if they maintain their Premier League status (Sky Sports Italy, 29 January).
However, Ilbianconero now report (21 March) only a “gentlemen’s agreement” is in place with the Serie A club, with a £34.5m deal, including bonuses, on the cards.

Confusion
The sacking of Jesse Marsch hasn’t helped McKennie’s situation, but this just adds to the confusion surrounding his future at Elland Road. Does this gentlemen’s agreement mean the board can still decline the option to make his move permanent if they secure their Premier League status?
It’s extremely unclear and you have to feel for the American midfielder, who hasn’t quite settled since making the move to West Yorkshire. It’s an interesting scenario and the board could have played a blinder if they decide to refrain from paying the £30million-plus transfer fee in the summer.

The decision to not include an obligation to buy could prove to be a smart one. Of course, we all want the Leeds United midfielder to be a success and if the club do make his move permanent, there’s a strong chance he will be an influential player in the 2023/24 season.
Hopefully, come the summer, there’s a lot more clarity on the American’s future.
