Leeds United hold behind-the-scenes talks over signing two players in January

A left-back and a striker “are being spoken about” by people at Leeds United as the January window edges closer, says The Athletic’s, Phil Hay.

Hay suggested on 22 December (The Athletic) that the club wanted those two positions filled in the winter window after failing to do so in the summer.

The Athletic journalist has since revealed in the latest edition of the Phil Hay Show, that discussions are now taking place behind the scenes at Elland Road.

“From speaking to people at the club, it does seem like a left-back and a striker are the things are being spoken about,” said Hay (Phil Hay Show, 10m 50s, 23 December).

“It feels to me that the club are aware that those are the positions they should be looking at.”

No surprises

It’s good the club know where their transfer priorities lie, but that was fairly obvious. A left-back must come through the doors in West Yorkshire and fast. Junior Firpo’s injury problems and inconsistent form has left Jesse Marsch with a headache, which should have been addressed in the summer.

Pascal Struijk has performed well out of position, however, it’s time for the Dutchman to return to his favoured role. Fans will be hoping for a deal to be struck early on in the January window so that the left-back issue doesn’t impact the Whites for too much longer.

A striker is still a pressing concern, with Rodrigo needing some adequate competition upfront. Patrick Bamford is still plagued by injury issues and hasn’t looked anywhere near his former self in the 2022/23 season. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old is well past his best.

A proven goalscorer to challenge the Spaniard would go a long way in easing Leeds’ relegation worries.

In other Leeds United news, this Elland Road veteran is now unsure whether he wants to end his time at LS11 despite a deal being close across the pond.
