Phil Hay: Leeds United have strong temptation to sign new left-back in January
Phil Hay has a strong sense that Leeds United will make a move for a new left-back when the transfer window opens in January.
It’s news that will be music to the ears of Whites, business in January is an absolute must if Leeds United want to challenge further up the Premier League table.
Hay confessed that he has a “strong sense” that Leeds will make a move for a left-back, hinting that the Yorkshire club may be exploring some options on the market.
“I do get quite a strong sense that there is going to be quite a strong temptation to look at a left-back, to try and find a left-back in January,” he said speaking on The Phil Hay Show podcast on Monday (7 November, 19m30s).
Borussia Dortmund full-back Raphael Guerreiro has been linked with a move to Leeds in recent days and this could be the left-back Hay is alluding to [TeamTalk].
A new left-back has to be one of the major priorities in the Leeds United squad right now after Junior Firpo’s failure to adapt even slightly in West Yorkshire.
With Stuart Dallas also on the sidelines for the Whites, the need for an out-and-out left-back has never been needed more at Elland Road.
Pascal Struijk has been used as emergency cover in the position and has done a great job in doing so but he’d be better used in his natural centre-back position.
Victor Orta may have his sights now permanently fixed on Guerreiro.
The Portuguese star is out of contract in 2023 and may be looking for a fresh adventure having played over 200 times for Dortmund.
Guerreiro is eligible to talk to overseas clubs from January 1 2023, meaning Hay’s feelings that the Whites will look for a left-back in January could be spot on.
Hopefully, Leeds can get this one over the line and sorted early.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are set to jet out to Spain with a major decision being made behind the scenes at Elland Road.
