Graham Smyth: Leeds United have clear plan for long-term design of centre forward role

Leeds United clearly have a long-term design of their centre-forward role after the signing of Georginio Rutter, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

The Whites firepower up top hasn’t looked this frightening for a while and Jesse Marsch will now have some selection headaches in the coming months.

Smyth confessed that Leeds United’s new “star-in-waiting” Rutter is clearly part of their future centre-forward plan but there are no guarantees he walks into the starting XI.

“There’s no real chance that even at 100 per cent, Rutter walks into this side,” said Smyth as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post. (21 January).

“He, like Bamford – who has three goals in two substitute appearances since his latest return from injury – will have to bide his time. But with a £28m transfer fee.

“A club record that just pipped the outlay for Rodrigo, and a five-and-a-half-year deal, it’s clear the club and their new star-in-waiting have long term designs on that centre-forward role.”

Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and now Rutter, Marsch has some options at his fingertips up top, something he needs to utilise as much as he can.

It’s the depth in the forward department that fans have been begging Victor Orta and co to sort out and it’s finally looking like the finished article.

A front three of Bamford, Rodrigo and Rutter? Why not? It could potentially work and Whites may be treated to seeing it sooner than you think.

Nevertheless, Smyth is right in saying that by no means does Rutter walk straight into this side, despite his hefty club-record transfer fee.

That’s not how things work at Leeds United and the Frenchman will have to prove himself worthy of a starting spot in Marsch’s XI in the weeks to come.

Whatever the case may be, it’s exciting to see the Whites making moves for genuine young, talented players, long may it continue.
