Leeds United handed financial windfall amid £121m FIFA development

Leeds United have received funds of $642,425 (£491,000) from FIFA for sending players to the 2022 World Cup.

As noted by the governing body, 440 clubs were paid $209million (£160million) for providing players for the tournament in Qatar.

Leading the way for confederations was UEFA, with its clubs receiving $158million (£121million) from the event at the end of last year.

Within the UEFA confederation, the Football Association was paid $37.7million (£28.8million), more than any other member association.

And narrowing the finances down further, Leeds – who were in the Premier League at the time – received £491,000 for sending players to Qatar, as confirmed by FIFA.

Much-needed boost

Finances are definitely tight at Elland Road this summer following the club’s relegation to the Championship, so this news will come as a massive boost for the West Yorkshire outfit.

It really does just show how important it is to have international players among the ranks, but that is something that may not be the case for the Whites in the years to come if they fail to get back to the Premier League.

The Whites have already lost the likes of Robin Koch and Brenden Aaronson this summer, albeit on a temporary basis.

And they could be followed out the door by international players such as Tyler Adams, Wilfried Gnonto and Rasmus Kristensen among others.

Given their current predicament, keeping hold of those quality players will be a very difficult challenge for Leeds ahead of the new Championship campaign.

For now, however, the club can accept this positive financial update and use the money wisely after their disappointing relegation from the top flight.
