Leeds United handed boost to hire former Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino

Leeds United now appear to be the only side in the race to hire former Barcelona manager after Valencia officially are not in contention.

Argentine media outlet TNT Sports reported on 13 February, that Valencia and Leeds were keen on Martino as both were looking for new managers.

However, a day later, the La Liga outfit made an official announcement that Ruben Baraja is set to be the manager with immediate effect.

Leeds have had a tough time in getting someone to join the club after they decided to sack Jesse Marsch.

Rayo Vallecano Andoni Iraola emerged as an early contender, but his side were not willing to let him leave and neither did he look to force an exit.

Even Marcelo Gallardo and Arne Slot turned down approaches to move to Elland Road in the middle of the season and they’re decent options as well.

While the Whites have announced that Michael Skubala and his team will be in charge for the coming games, the quest will still continue for new managers.

Given Valencia out of the race, we will not be surprised if they approach Martino now and he would be a great appointment until the end of the season.

Not only does he have the experience of managing a European giant in Barcelona, he’s also proven that he can win titles and play attractive football.

Thus far, he’s got four league titles to his name in his managerial career and while that’s not going to be the target at Elland Road any time soon, the winning mentality will certainly rub off on the players.
