Leeds United hailed 'special' despite defeat v Arsenal by Tony Dorigo

Leeds United pushed Premier League leaders Arsenal all the way on Sunday (16 October) but eventually fell to a 1-0 defeat at Elland Road.

Despite coming away from the game with zero points to shout about, former Whites player Tony Dorigo was very impressed by Jesse Marsch’s side.

The Yorkshire Evening Post columnist only saw one obvious flaw in the game plan that saw Mikel Arteta’s Gunners scamper away from Leeds with all three points.

“I felt so gutted for the boys, who were absolutely magnificent and put together a second-half performance that was pretty special,” Dorigo said. “All it was missing was that vital ingredient – those goals.

“The second 45 minutes were the best we’ve seen under Jesse Marsch, taking the opposition into context as well. Arsenal were unbeaten, flying, confident and boasted flying wingers who we felt could cause us plenty of problems.

“Yet we battered them. People were saying afterwards that we deserved a point but I thought we deserved all three.”

Nine times out of 10

If Marsch can get the Leeds United squad playing like that every single week then the majority of games will end in victory, it was just a shame that they produced such a good performance against the league leaders.

The season won’t be defined by results against the traditional big six teams for Leeds but they do need to turn up and perform against the rest and they could quickly find themselves as the best of the rest.

Nine times out of ten they would win games by putting in that level of performance and it would only be a lack of clinical edge that prevents them from doing so and it proved to be the case against Arsenal.

Patrick Bamford is still trying to find his match sharpness again after a lengthy injury spell so that can be excused but Rodrigo has already found the net four times this season.

He now has to take on the challenge of being the main source of goals at Elland Road or he could be one player Marsch and Victor Orta look to replace in the near future.

In other Leeds United news, Cody Gakpo has finally revealed all about his summer of speculation and whether he was close to joining the Whites late in the window.
