Leeds United: Graham Smyth shares what 49ers chiefs did to Joel Piroe in Swansea City win
Leeds United chiefs stood up and gave Joel Piroe a standing ovation as he was substituted in the Whites’ win over Swansea City, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Wednesday (14 February) that Angus Kinnear, Gretar Steinsson and Adam Underwood all rose from their seats to applaud the Dutchman as he made his way off the field in the closing exchanges of the game.
Piroe registered his 11 Championship goal of the season against his former club in Tuesday’s (13 February) 4-0 win, having been a last-minute replacement for Patrick Bamford who was unable to feature in South Wales having picked up an injury.
Joel Piroe worth Leeds United and the 49ers’ money
Under the management of Daniel Farke and the ownership of 49ers Enterprises this summer, Leeds United had to rebuild their playing squad after a damaging relegation from the Premier League saw their team torn apart completely.
While money was spent on a number of different players at Elland Road, the most expensive signing the Whites made was Piroe and the Dutchman proved against Swansea why he was worth every penny of the £12million they reportedly spent on him [Wales Online, 24 August].

The 24-year-old’s display in South Wales was excellent, especially considering he was drafted in at such late notice, but it couldn’t have come at a much better time as the Whites’ chiefs watched on from the stands.
Bamford has been in fine form and when fit, the Englishman simply has to lead the line at this moment in time, but Piroe is doing all that he can to show he deserves regular involvement in Farke’s team as well. If he keeps scoring goals, he’ll force his way back into the side.
In other Leeds United news, Danny Rohl has admitted that Ian Poveda was desperate to leave Elland Road in January
