Leeds United: Graham Smyth shares ‘serious’ admission as £129m+ update emerges at Elland Road

Graham Smyth has revealed there has been a “serious” increase in wages at Leeds United after the club published their latest accounts.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist tweeted a document from the Whites’ financial submission for 2022/23, showing that the club’s wages jumped from £106.5million in 2021/22 to £129.4million the following year.

He also highlighted the cost of managers moving on from Elland Road after it was revealed that redundancies and ex-gratia payments made up £9.5million of the payroll costs.

Leeds United felt the cost of poor managerial decisions

It’s no surprise to see that Leeds forked out a substantial amount to former managers after Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce all left the club last season.

In the previous year, payments of that nature were much lower at £3.5million after Marcelo Bielsa was relieved of his duties at Elland Road.

The Whites were forced to pay a pretty penny in 2023 for making the wrong managerial choices which, ultimately, led to their eventual relegation from the Premier League.

They shouldn’t have such problems this year as Daniel Farke’s job is pretty safe following a solid season so far, with his side challenging for an immediate return to the top flight.

But the German will be keen to ensure they get over the line in the next few weeks to avoid there being any speculation around his position in West Yorkshire.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted an offer to sign a forward sensation as a fee development has emerged.
