Leeds United: Graham Smyth disgusted by ‘rank’ official update ahead of FA Cup clash v Chelsea
Graham Smyth is disgusted by London North Eastern Railway after they confirmed a price hike for Leeds United fans who want to get back to Yorkshire after the midweek FA Cup clash at Chelsea next week.
Daniel Farke’s men head to Stamford Bridge in the fifth round of the cup on Wednesday, 28 February.
However, as pointed out by Leeds fan Sam Jacobs on X, there is only one train from London to Leeds after the match, which leaves at 11:33pm with return tickets costing an extortionate £218.65.
LNER’s official X account then replied to confirm that the train is fully booked but are still trying to get Leeds fans to buy their dearest tickets.
“Hello. That service is fully booked so, you’d be buying an anytime ticket (the most expensive) in order to board hence the price difference. Apologies about this,” said LNER.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth was clearly stunned by the update, calling it “rank” on his personal X account on 21 February.
Leeds United fans ripped off by rail company for FA Cup showdown
It’s absolutely disgusting that companies are allowed to do this.
It seems like a clear attempt by LNER to rip off Leeds fans – and football fans in general – by upping their prices.
What’s even more ridiculous is that they’re willing to overpack a train that’s already fully booked.
This country is an absolute mess at the moment and calls for nationalised rail services will continue to be supported as long as private companies are allowed to do this.
But no one in power seems to care. None of them are bothered as long as they receive their fat pay cheque at the end of the month.
It would be great if at least the FA or the Premier League gave up some of their millions to help subsidise rail travel if these companies are allowed to continue ripping people off.
They’ll claim that football is for the fans but ultimately, football is all about the money for them and for the likes of LNER.
